Propps suggested that
every narrative has 8 different character types, which Propps referred to as ‘spheres
of action’, these are:
·
A Villain: this is someone who fights against the hero in
some way.
·
The Dispatcher: this is someone who makes the villain known and sends the hero away to
bring the villain to justice.
·
The Magical Helper: this is someone who helps the hero on his
quests.
·
The Princess: this is someone who the hero adores, and usually has to be saved.
·
The Father of the Princess: this is someone who gives tasks to the hero, however, Propps states that
the Princess and her father can very rarely be clearly identified.
·
The Hero: is the one carrying out the quest trying to stop the villain.
·
False Hero: this is someone who takes credit for the hero’s actions, and tries to
take the princess for himself.
